Work for AFEW Rahul Mishra

Season : Launch Collection, SS24
My Role : Print and Surface Design for all Textiles
AFEW is the Ready-to-Wear arm of Rahul Mishra's expansive couture universe. AFEW stands for 'Air, Fire, Earth, Water' and its ethos lies in world-building and nature-inspired illustrative elements, in order to create playful yet refined pieces. Being part of the team since its inception, I was the sole textile designer responsible for prints, placements, surface design. In the Launch and SS24 collections, various briefs or 'stories' were worked upon to create smaller capsules. Presented as a showcase in Palais de Tokyo, Paris in 2023.

01. Hibiscus
and Carnation
Poppies from an archival Rahul Mishra couture collection were re-interpreted into bold, graphical floral motifs, creating a 'micro-ecosystem' within each flower. Iterations were made through print, embroidery and applique, to suit a variety of products.

Embroidery and applique treatments of motifs designed. Poppies were contemporarized, taking elements from hibiscus (red) and carnations (white). Placements were done as per garment silhouettes.

Block repeat prints designed incorporating both flowers, in two colourways.

02. Day
and Night
Taking the Himalayan landscapes of an older couture collection from the brand, two prints representing 'day' and 'night' each were designed and placed on garments. one was made in a 'painterly' style, and another in a graphical style.
The painterly versions were made in collaboration with another colleague.

'Day'
The 'painterly' print (below) is printed over a sequin-sheeted fabric to add luminance. It is used across a range of garments as a placement print. The graphical print is used over t-shirts with embroidered highlights and textures.

03. Runway
Pop Tonals
Multiple surfaces were developed to create exaggerated, attention-grabbing pieces for the paris runway show of the Launch Collection. Embellished diagonal checks, 3D flowers and all-over petals were the key briefs. Pop tones like lime, lavender, cobalt, along with white and black were used.

Diagonal grids as a starting point gave rise to a number of iterations, extending the collection with all-over surfaces. lightweight tulle, silk satin, organdy, cotton poplin were used as bases. 3D elements were added in floral forms and draped using hard mesh backing.
